Mark McGinness (2009/10) Secondary History I am entering the teaching profession as a second career after a full career in the Regular Army. While serving in the forces on of my main responsibilities was the training of soldiers in all aspects of their employment. I attended many career courses which entailed at its heart, instruction and teaching soldiers many skills. This I enjoyed most of all in my career.
When I left the forces in 2004 I was not sure what I wanted to do so I interviewed for a job at Sandown High School as a Cover Supervisor which was a new concept utilising skills of non-teachers to deliver lessons already planned. I did this for 18months and started to think that I could in fact work and teach in a classroom as a career. I after all had worked with younger people all my life, albeit in a different environment. The leap from camouflage to a classroom is not huge as one would think! My main obstacle to achieving this was having no Degree qualification. Inspired by the staff of the History Department at In my last year of study I applied for the GTP at Sandown and was successful in gaining a place. Having graduated with a BA (Hons) in History and training to be a teacher I have managed to fulfil two ambitions in a relatively short space of time. I am currently placed at Solent Middle School which is a fantastic place to learn how to teach where the staff are extremely welcoming and more to the point thoroughly professional in their attitude to making Solent Middle a great environment for learning. The students at Solent Middle are a credit to themselves and the school. I am looking forward to a very busy and demanding but ultimately fulfilling year. |
