Tom Harding (2009/10) Having spent nearly 9 years working in industry management, a career change came as quite a surprise to many of my friends and colleagues. However, growing up in a family with education the main focus and having always enjoyed the thrill of learning myself, I was keen to join the profession for many years. Outside work, I have been involved with teaching Sailing and Skiing and love discovering new and exciting ways of helping people learn. The skills I gained from my background in Business and Management are purposefully transferred into the classroom and allow me to bring new concepts and ideas into teaching. I have always strived for achieving even the tiniest progression in a young person – and this continues to be the most rewarding part of teaching.
Having spent 4 out of my 5 weeks Annual Leave shadowing teachers in a local school, I was in no doubt that I was making the right decision. After researching various routes into teaching, the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) ticked every box. Clearly it is financially beneficial with it offering a good salary for the training period, but most importantly the training programme is school based. You hit the ground running from Day 1. And due to being employed by the school itself, you’re expected to carry out the duties of a fully qualified teacher both in and out of the classroom – ensuring that you are properly trained in all aspects of teaching. |
