Vicky Wells (2009/10) Primary Trainee, Holy Cross RC Primary School
I graduated from the University of Exeter this year (2009) with a degree in Drama. I had been thinking for some time that I would like to pursue a career in teaching. Prior to University I took a year out teaching in a Primary school in Tanzania for 6 months. This was a real hands on experience; I was finding myself planning lessons right away and taking charge of a class of 30 children for whom English was not their first language. This gave me a quick insight into the life of a teacher and the joys of working with children.

Having such a practical experience in Tanzania, I decided that is how I would like to train to be a teacher. The GTP allows you to do just that. In the classroom from the word go, you gain invaluable information from the staff and children around you daily, from continuous observations and interaction with them. I have enjoyed being able to practice teaching so early on in the classroom, even though it is at first quite daunting, it also allows you to see your development in the true setting. You are able to be an active member in and throughout the life of the school.
